Ararat Gallery TAMA

Ararat Gallery TAMA

Ararat Gallery TAMA (Textile Art Museum Australia) holds Australia's most comprehensive textile and fibre art collection. Often working in collaboration with high-profile institutions such as the NGV and Craft Victoria, the gallery presents an innovative exhibition program.

Ararat Rural City Council needed fresh life brought to two important cultural institutions as part of an historic architectural redevelopment of its Arts Precinct. The rebrand brief was to build two unique identities for the regional city's Art Gallery and Performing Arts Centre simultaneously. The two brands needed strategic unity but visual independence.

To honour the heritage of the town, the monogram “A” of the brand echoes the stencilled wool bales ubiquitous to the region. The use of contemporary fonts from leading foundries, Sharp and Grilli Type, act to ground the brand squarely in the present and ensure relevance into the future. The monochrome colour palette represents the stark white space of the new gallery in contrast to the black box of its sibling; the Town Hall Theatre. A vivid supporting colour palette adapts in response to the imagery of each new exhibition.
